AOR - L.A Connection (2014)

AOR - L.A Connection (2014) full

Frédéric Slama started the AOR project almost 15 years ago featuring star vocalists from the genre for his 'L.A.' records, offering over the years some truly great material.
Since the last three CD's the quality has been slightly decreasing, but I'm happy to say that in the new album "L.A Connection" (no dot in the 'A' ?), Slama has produced one of the more consistent AOR albums to date.

Helped by Swedish magician Tommy Denander, on "L.A Connection" the old Westcoast sounds from the beginnings of the AOR project practically disappeared.
AOR 2014 is absolutely Melodic Hard Rock oriented, this time featuring the guest contributions from the likes of Bill Champlin (Chicago) and his wife Tamara, Bob Harris (Axe), Philip Bardowell (Places Of Power, Unruly Child), Paul Sabu (Only Child, Kidd Glove), Jeff Paris or David Forbes (Boulevard).
'Only' nine songs have been included on the album, and this benefits the record, as all are good avoiding some fillers present on previous releases.

All starts with “On The Edge Of Glory”, enriched with Bill Champlin’s trademark vocals (more rough than usual, and I like it) and a strong guitar riff and punchy keyboards.
The first seconds of the second track, “The Pride Of Strangers,” leave no doubt to those who are familiar with the recordings of Only Child or Kidd Glove – this raspy, sensual and very powerful voice belongs to no one else but the mighty Paul Sabu. This fiery vocal performance of him is, without a doubt, one of the highlights of the entire album.
More mellow, but nevertheless perfectly melodic is “Closer To Zero” with David Forbes (Boulevard) singing lead.

Its follow-up is “Once Off Guard,” largely anticipated by the fans of the project (and the genre) because of the announced contribution of Jeff Paris. This is another highlight of the album, not only because of the Paris’ vocal input but also a blistering guitar solo.
In “Lost Souls Don’t Cry,” sung by Philip Bardowell, some distant echoes of Giant and Foreigner can be heard. Further on, you’ll find some other flavors, as the perfect groove of “Exiled In Sadness” or the keyboard-driven “Age Of Desire”, the more AOR (genre) song on offer here.

The next “Circle Of Danger” is embellished with the solid and emotional performance of Tamara Champlin, this time the only woman behind the microphone in the AOR project – as well as a solid portion of Tommy Denander’s guitar licks.
“The Crystal Heart,” a nostalgic and reflective ballad sung by Bob Harris, closes the album on a very high note.

"L.A Connection" is the thirteenth album in Frédéric Slama’s AOR discography – and a clear proof that all the superstition regarding the unluckiness of the number '13' is much hyped anyway!
At least, for the Melodic Hard Rock and AOR fans who are treated with a high quality performance and top production on this fresh AOR record, perhaps the best on the entire Slama recording history.
Much Recommended.

AOR - The Secrets Of L.A. [Japanese Edition] (2013)

AOR - The Secrets Of L.A. [Japanese Edition] (2013) full

The new album entitled "The Secrets Of L.A." by Frédéric Slama's project AOR to be released through German label Aor Heaven next November 29th in Europe, is currently available in Japan (with 2 bonus tracks) via Rubicon Music.
As usual, the recording features high caliber stars such as Fergie Frederiksen, Jeff Scott Soto, Bill Champlin, Jim Jidhed, Robin Beck, Goran Edman and lots more.

At this point, one should ask if we have not had enough Slama's AOR discs titled 'L.A.' by now, as "The Secrets Of L.A." is the 12th... but that's not the remarkable spot here. The issue falls in the dangerously tendency to repeat over and over the same thing again.
Fortunately, "The Secrets Of L.A." shows a slightly different approach than the previous volumes; it's the harder, more edgy Melodic Hard Rock oriented recording ever from the AOR / Slama factory.
The other positive plus on this new offering is the fact Slama is increasingly getting better and better vocalists to sing his tunes on each recording.

We still find the '80s inspired smooth Westcoast / AOR (genre) songs in this "The Secrets Of L.A." like "Deep Whirlpool" (the immense Fergie Frederiksen on lead vox), the velvety "Secrets In The Shadows" featuring Alien's Jim Jidhed or the always brilliant Robin Beck on "The Name Of The Game", all enhancing the quality with great performances.
But it's on the rocking, guitar-driven numbers where this new AOR album brings a new, fresh air.

I was quite surprised to see a rocking lung like the phenomenal Axe's Bob Harris hired to perform not one, but two songs here; the sharp, close to hard rock "Out Of The Past" and the dynamic melodic rocker "The Main Attraction". Harris sings his heart out on these tracks in an almost Glenn Hughes-like delivery, providing a more muscular vibe to this AOR recording.
But we have more; Jeff Scott Soto rocks-up "Stage Struck" - very well selected to perform this corker - Goran Edman is used in his more agressive side for "Web Of Lies", and even Bill Champlin turns the obviously 'L.A. session' penned "Back To San Francisco" into an uptempo rocker, proving this new AOR CD goes for something more meaty.

The new AOR album "The Secrets Of L.A." offers a varied, different bulk this time: more rocking oriented songs blended with smooth melodic tunes to seduce a wider audience.
This Japanese version worth the purchase as includes two good bonuses in the cool "I Owe It To Myself" featuring the lead vocals of Manu Esteve (from the underratred Hardreams), and a melodious performance from Swedes' Houston main singer Hank Erix on "The Price To Pay".
Easily Recommended.

AOR - L.A. Temptation (2012)

AOR - L.A. Temptation (2012)

At this time all of you have heard about AOR project masterminded by French musician and composer Frédéric Slama.
His latest album "L. A. Temptation" is another in the line of albums with 'L.A.' in its title, marking Slama's fascination with American West Coast AOR.

The new CD is once more created in an impressive manner with a bunch of outstanding guests as usual: vocals by Chris Ousey (Heartland), Göran Edman, James Christian (House of Lords), Paul Sabu, Jerry Hludzik (Dakota) to name some, and Tommy Denander conducting the instrumental contributions of Michael Landau, Bruce Gaitsch, Alessandro Del Vecchio, etc.

"L.A. Temptation" is the more Euro Melodic Rock recording of this project until now.
The AOR style is still here, but the main sound approach leans more into MR and modern production.
So if you're a bit bored or complaining that this project always sounds the same, you will be surprised by this new CD. Definitely with more bite and rocking moments. Production is much better than in previous efforts, specially the drums.
My favorites are the (believe it or not) only real ballad here; "Second Chance at Love" where Edman sings a sweet melody with soaring guitars in the background, and the uptempo "Silent Victory" as it's strange hear the raspy vocals of Paul Shortino singing this type of stuff, but he delivers a flawless performance.
Extremely polished and warmly produced, "L. A. Temptation" is another fine installment from these experienced and classy musicians.
Very Good.

AOR - L.A. Reflection [Yesterrock remaster + bonus] (2012)

AOR - L.A. Reflection [Yesterrock remaster + bonus] (2012) mp3 download

The two very earlier albums properly released by AOR project - out of print - are being reissued, remastered and with bonus tracks by Yesterrock / Alive label.
"L.A. Reflection" was the first, originally published ten years ago. And in my opinion, it's one of the best from this project.

"L.A. Reflection" is one of the best as most of the tracks were recorded in the USA during the late '80s and '90s, and somehow captures those year's essence.
Sure, the sound and production quality varies a little as different studios and producers were used, but thanks to this remaster finally we have a balanced CD and with really good dynamics.

At this point, with so many 'L.A.' releases by Frederic Slama under his AOR moniker, listeners and collectors are a bit confused of what they got or not.
Chances are that you have the original edition with very low gain and poor sound (check if it says 2002).
This "L.A. Reflection" remastered is a completely different listening experience. In addition, you have the original Japanese bonus tracks and a couple previously unreleased songs.
A must have for any AOR fan - Get it pronto: Limited Edition.

1. If No One Cared
2. Sensation
3. Never Gonna Let Her Go

AOR - Dreaming Of L.A. (2012)

AOR - Dreaming Of L.A. (2012) yesterrock mp3 download mediafire

Any fan of the AOR / Westcoast genre is already aware of this project conducted by French musician Frederic Slama , which between original releases and compilations has reached 10 CD's now.

The first two albums of this venture consisted of demos recorded in California during the eighties and nineties and were released privately manufactured on CD-R.
For the third and fourth releases "L.A. Reflection" and "Dreaming Of L.A.", a small specialized Japanese label took the flag and published both efforts professionally, later issued in Europe by German company AORheaven.

Out of print, these discs now are being re-released by the prestigious reissue label Yesterrock, remastered with brand new booklets and a bunch of bonus tracks.
Both are good, but if I have to pick one, "Dreaming Of L.A." is the chosen because includes Dane Donohue (who released a classic self-titled WestCoast album decades ago) recording again after countless years.

As usual, you have the who's who of Westcoast L.A. musos, top class performers such as Steve Lukather, Michael Landau, Goran Edman or Steve Overland, with Tommy Denander arranging and playing as well.
A must for WestCoast AOR fans. Limited Edition.
